The San Francisco Bay Area has long been home to some of the country’s most prominent philanthropic organizations, with institutions like the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and David and Lucile Packard Foundation commanding international recognition. In fact, the Bay Area hosts more than a third of California’s overall grantmaking foundations, with more than half of the state’s total giving coming from this region alone. It makes sense, then, that when COVID-19 left the Bay Area’s economy reeling, philanthropic organizations stepped up. Over the course of the last 18 months, these institutions have played a leading role in dealing with, and working to recover from, the pandemic and its accompanying recession. Hear from some of the region's key philanthropic organizations as they reflect on the role that philanthropy can play in building an equitable recovery in the Bay Area and the steps necessary to get there.
