Cities are the focal points of commerce, innovation and communities, and while they only cover roughly 3-4% of the world’s surface, they produce 75% of global GDP and contribute to over more than 70% of global carbon emissions. As the race to net-zero intensifies, it’s clear that urban areas have a crucial role to play in the delivery and implementation of a decarbonized world. In the words of the World Economic Forum, ‘’Cities are at the heart of our journey to net-zero.’’ A greener and smarter city not only encourages a more sustainable way of living but promotes access and opportunity to companies who align with its environmental targets and values. This forum, the fourth in the FT Race to Net-Zero series, will ask panelists to explore how the development of urban areas can shine a light on what a successful decarbonization strategy looks like. In a series of conversations, policymakers, investors and key industry stakeholders will discuss the steps needed to set a sustainable path for future cities in the global fight against climate change.
