Diesel and the other fuels that power trucks, trains, ships and planes play a critical role is how we move people and goods around the state. But these fuels pose a serious threat to both the health of communities and the larger environment. Not just a source of carbon dioxide (CO2), these fuels also create short-lived climate pollutants, including black carbon and tropospheric ozone, which are even more powerful climate forcers than CO2. How can we quantify the risk that these fuels pose, and who bears the greatest burden? What will it take to quickly transition to cleaner solutions, and what could we do if California voters approve $70 billion over the next two decades to fight for clean air and abate climate change?
